Recipe & Nutrition
-
Yes, Better Than Me is formulated to meet or exceed all AAFCO nutritional standards for adult dogs and complies with AAFCO labeling requirements.
To verify our guaranteed nutritional analysis, our recipe has been independently tested by an accredited laboratory.
-
Every ingredient in our recipe has a purpose—we choose them because they contribute something valuable to your dog's nutrition. You can learn more about our ingredients here.
We use the following ingredients, (listed in descending weight order):
Beef, Chicken, Whitefish, Chicken Gizzards, Carrots, Kale, Sardines, Organic Eggs, Oysters, Broccoli, Green Beans, Chicken Liver, Organic Rolled Oats, Beef Heart, Beef Kidney, Organic Ground Flaxseed, Wheat Germ Oil, Beef Liver, Blueberries, Dried Yeast, Organic Ground Eggshell, Sunflower Lecithin, Dried Kelp
-
We include beef, chicken, and fish in a single recipe because each contributes a unique nutritional profile. Together, they provide a wider variety of naturally occurring amino acids, fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals than any one protein source alone.
For dogs without food allergies, this variety helps create a well-rounded, nutrient-dense diet. Of course, if your dog has allergies to any of these protein sources, or other ingredients in our recipe, Better Than Me unfortunately won’t be a good fit for them.
However, we’re definitely open to developing additional recipes in the future. We love feedback, so please reach out! -
Better Than Me is formulated to be complete and balanced for adult and senior dogs. In pet-food nutrition, this life stage is referred to as “Adult Maintenance”, meaning the diet is formulated for dogs who have finished growing.
You may notice that many commercial dog foods are labeled as “All Life Stages”, which means they are formulated to meet nutritional requirements for both growing puppies and adult dogs. Puppies have notably different nutritional needs during growth, including different requirements for energy and several essential nutrients.
Following the guidance we received during our veterinary nutrition consultations, we chose to formulate specifically for adult maintenance rather than for all life stages, allowing us to focus the recipe on the distinct nutritional needs of adult and senior dogs.
-
If your dog has a chronic health condition or specialized dietary needs, we recommend speaking with your veterinarian before making any dietary change.
Better Than Me is formulated for healthy adult dogs and is not intended to replace a prescription or therapeutic diet. If your veterinarian has prescribed a specific diet, it's important to continue following their recommendations.
Dogs with medical conditions that require dietary modification, including a history of pancreatitis, urate urolithiasis, hyperlipidemia, kidney or liver disease, severe food allergies, or conditions requiring fat, protein, mineral, or other nutrient restriction should be fed a diet under the guidance of their veterinarian.

We think preparing fresh food at home can be a wonderful way to care for your dog!
In developing Better Than Me, we've learned firsthand just how much precision goes into creating a complete and balanced diet from whole foods. Dogs require specific amounts and ratios of essential amino acids, fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals. Consistently meeting all of those requirements takes careful formulation.
Research has found that up to 95% of homemade dog food recipes are missing one or more essential nutrients.
If you’re interested in preparing your dog's food at home, we recommend working with a veterinary nutritionist who can create a recipe tailored to your dog's age, lifestyle, allergies, and any medical conditions.
